It’s clear the Fever miss all their injured teammates, but this time it was all about Sophie, who just underwent surgery.
ophie Cunningham’s first season with the Fever came to an abrupt and painful end earlier this month when the veteran guard suffered a torn medial collateral ligament (MCL) in her right knee. However, Cunningham has had plenty of reasons to smile, including a sweet tribute from Indiana before the team’s game against the Lynx on Sunday afternoon.
Cunningham underwent surgery last Friday and shared a happy selfie from her hospital bed before the operation. A few days later, the Fever made sure Cunningham was with the team in spirit during the pre-game warm-up on Sunday.
All the players participated in a routine half-court shooting contest, and Fever assistant coach Karima Christmas-Kelly stepped in for Cunningham. She ended up sinking her half-court shot, sparking joy and euphoria among the rest of the Fever.
“Shoutout to Sophie!” exclaimed Caitlin Clark as she celebrated with Christmas-Kelly. With Clark, Cunningham, and several players still injured, the Fever (19-17), who have been on a rough patch, are looking to get back on the winning track after losing five of their last seven games.
