Taylor walked out of her mother’s hospital room and the fluorescent lights in the corridor felt like they were burning straight through her skull. Or maybe that was just the tears she was desperately trying to hold back because Andrea Swift was going through her second round of chemotherapy. And seeing her daughter cry was the last thing she needed right now.
But then Taylor spotted Travis sitting in one of those uncomfortable plastic chairs that seemed designed to make waiting even more miserable. his elbows on his knees, his head buried in his hands, and something about the way he was holding himself, all hunched over and tense, made Taylor’s feet stop moving. He must have heard her footsteps because he looked up and the expression on his face, this mixture of guilt and fear, and something else Taylor couldn’t quite identify, made her stomach drop hard and fast.
“How is she?” Travis asked, his voice rough like he’d been crying, or maybe just sitting in tense silence for too long. and he stood up quickly, reaching for Taylor the way he always did, like touching her was as automatic as breathing. But Taylor took a step back, just one step, just enough that his hand hung in the air between them for a second before falling to his side.
And she watched confusion flash across his face, followed by something that looked like panic. “What did my mom ask you?” Taylor said, and her voice came out flat, completely emotionless, which was the only way she could manage to speak right now without screaming or breaking down completely.
Travis’s face went pale, actually drained of color right there in the harsh hospital lighting. And Taylor watched him swallow hard, watched his jaw clench and unclench. Tay, let me explain. he started. And those four words, those [ __ ] four words that guilty people always said when they were about to try to justify something unjustifiable, made something inside Taylor’s chest just snap.
She asked you if you were serious about me, Taylor said. And now her voice was starting to rise, getting louder, and she saw a nurse down the hall glance over, but she couldn’t bring herself to care. She asked you if you were serious about us, about this relationship, about our future, and you know what you told her? Travis opened his mouth, but nothing came out.

And Taylor could see him physically struggling. Could see every muscle in his body tensing up as he tried to find words that would somehow make this better.
But there were no words that could make this better. No explanation that would undo what he’d said.
You told her, “I’m not sure yet,” Taylor continued, and her voice cracked on the last word, and she felt the first tears starting to spill over, hot and angry as they ran down her cheeks. You told my mother, “My sick mother, my mother who is lying in that room right now, fighting for her life, that you’re not sure yet if you’re serious about her daughter.
” Travis took a step toward her and reached out, but Taylor held up her hand like a stop sign and he froze. “That’s not what I meant,” he said, and his voice was desperate now, pleading. “Then what the hell did you mean, Travis?” Taylor demanded, and she was crying openly now, not even trying to hide it anymore.
Because my mom called me back into that room after you left, and she had tears in her eyes. Do you understand that? But Taylor took a step back, just one step, just enough that his hand hung in the air between them for a second before falling to his side. And she watched confusion flash across his face, followed by something that looked like panic.
“What did my mom ask you?” Taylor said, and her voice came out flat, completely emotionless, which was the only way she could manage to speak right now without screaming or breaking down completely. She was crying because the man her daughter has been dating for months, the man who’s been to family dinners and holidays and who she’s welcomed into our family with open arms, just told her that he doesn’t know if he’s serious.
Travis ran both hands through his hair, a gesture Taylor had seen countless times when he was frustrated or overwhelmed. And normally, she found it endearing, but right now it just made her angrier because he didn’t get to be the one who was frustrated here. “She put me on the spot,” Travis said. And the second those words left his mouth, Taylor actually saw him realize how terrible they sounded.
Saw him physically wse at his own excuse. She put you on the spot? Taylor repeated and her voice had gone dangerously. Quiet now. The kind of quiet that came right before an explosion. My mother, who is literally fighting cancer right now, who might not make it through this, who just wanted to know if the man in her daughter’s life was going to be there for her, put you on the spot.
It wasn’t like that, Travis said, his voice rising now, too. And Taylor could hear defensiveness creeping in. She didn’t just ask if I cared about you, Tay. She asked if I was ready to marry you. If I was ready to be there through everything, if I could handle your life, your career, your fame, all of it. But Taylor took a step back, just one step, just enough that his hand hung in the air between them for a second before falling to his side.
And she watched confusion flash across his face, followed by something that looked like panic. What did my mom ask you? Taylor said, and her voice came out flat, completely emotionless, which was the only way she could manage to speak right now without screaming or breaking down completely. She asked me if I was ready to be your husband, and I panicked.
The hospital corridor seemed to tilt sideways for a second, and Taylor actually had to put her hand on the wall to steady herself because those words, marriage and husband, were suddenly hanging in the air between them like live grenades. So, your answer was to tell her you’re not sure? Taylor said, and her whole body was shaking now, trembling with anger and hurt and fear all mixed together.
Your answer was to make my dying mother worry that her daughter is wasting her time with someone who doesn’t even know what he wants. Don’t say that, Travis said, and his voice came out sharp and firm. Don’t say your mother is dying. Andrea is strong and she’s fighting and she’s going to make it through this. Taylor let out a laugh that sounded bitter and broken. You don’t know that, Travis.
Nobody knows that. And the fact that you’re standing here arguing semantics with me instead of understanding why what you said was so incredibly [ __ ] up just proves that maybe you really aren’t sure. Maybe you really don’t know what you want from this relationship. But wait, because what happened next in that sterile hospital corridor showed both of them just how much pain they’d been carrying around separately.
How many fears they’ve been hiding from each other. How terrifyingly close they were to losing everything they’d built together. because neither of them knew how to be vulnerable without being absolutely terrified. Travis’s face just crumpled, actually crumpled like someone had physically struck him.
And Taylor watched as tears started streaming down his cheeks as the 6’5 NFL player who tackled people for a living started openly crying right there in the middle of the hospital corridor. “You think I don’t know what I want?” he said, and his voice was thick with tears, choked with emotion.
“Tay, I know exactly what I want. I want you. I want all of you, the good parts and the scary parts and the parts that terrify me because they’re so much bigger than anything I’ve ever experienced before. I want your career and your fans and your insane schedule and your need to be perfect at everything. I want your family.
I want Sunday dinners with your mom and dad. I want to be there when Andrea beats this thing. And I want to be there for every treatment and every scan and every moment of fear and every victory. Taylor felt her own tears coming faster now. felt her anger starting to crack and splinter. But she wasn’t ready to let it go yet. Wasn’t ready to forgive him.
“Then why the hell did you tell her you weren’t sure?” she demanded, her voice breaking. Travis wiped at his face with the back of his hand. But the tears kept coming, and when he looked at her now, his eyes were so raw, so completely exposed, that Taylor felt it like a physical pain in her chest. “Because I’m terrified that I’m not enough for you,” he said.
and the words came rushing out like he’d been holding them in for so long that they were fighting to escape. I’m terrified that one day you’re going to wake up and realize that I’m just a football player, that I can’t write songs or perform for millions of people or create art the way you do. That I’m going to hold you back or drag you down or somehow not be able to keep up with your incredible life.
” Taylor just stared at him, her mouth actually hanging open. Because in all the months they’d been together, through all the late night conversations and the fights and the makeups and the vulnerable moments, Travis had never said this. Had never once admitted that he felt inadequate, that he was scared of not being good enough.
“When your mom asked me if I was serious,” Travis continued. And now he was crying so hard that he could barely get the words out. I panicked because all I could think was that she was going to see right through me. She was going to see that I’m not good enough for her daughter, that I’m not smart enough or cultured enough or whatever enough to deserve you.
And I thought if I said I wasn’t sure if I bought myself some time, maybe I could figure out how to become the man you deserve. You absolute idiot, Taylor said, and her voice was soft now, thick with her own tears, and she was moving toward him before she even realized she’d made the decision, closing the distance between them in three quick steps. I want your family.
I want Sunday dinners with your mom and dad. I want to be there when Andrea beats this thing. And I want to be there for every treatment and every scan and every moment of fear and every victory. Taylor felt her own tears coming faster now. Felt her anger starting to crack and splinter, but she wasn’t ready to let it go yet. Wasn’t ready to forgive him.
Then why the hell did you tell her you weren’t sure? She demanded, her voice breaking. She reached up and put both her hands on his face. Felt the wetness of his tears under her palms. Felt him trembling. Travis, you are enough. You’ve always been enough. The problem isn’t that you’re not good enough for me.
The problem is that you don’t see what I see. You don’t understand that you’re the best thing that’s ever happened to me. Travis closed his eyes and more tears leaked out. And Taylor felt her own tears flowing freely now. Felt all her anger dissolving into something deeper and more painful and more real. But you hurt my mom,” she whispered and her voice cracked on the word mom. “Trav, you hurt her.
” She’s in there scared and sick and worried about what happens to me if she doesn’t make it through this. And you made her more scared. You made her think that I’m going to be alone, that I’m going to end up heartbroken again.” Travis opened his eyes and pulled back just slightly, just enough to look at her properly, and his face was absolutely destroyed, completely wrecked with guilt and pain and love, all mixed together in a way that made Taylor’s heart ache.
I know, he said, his voice coming out and broken. Tay, I know, and I hate myself for it. I hate that I said the wrong thing. I hate that I scared her. I hate that I made this about me and my stupid insecurities when it should have been about reassuring her that I’m going to take care of you no matter what happens. He took a shaky breath.
But I need you to understand something and I need you to really hear me when I say this. I am serious about you about us. I’m so serious that it terrifies me every single day. I’m so serious that I think about forever and it doesn’t scare me nearly as much as the thought of losing you does. Taylor felt something break open inside her chest.
felt all the walls she’d been building up start to crumble. And she leaned forward until her forehead was pressed against his chest until she could hear his heartbeat fast and hard and real under her ear. “You can’tt do that again,” she whispered into his shirt. “You can’t panic and say things you don’t mean, especially not to my mom.
She needs to know that you’re steady, that you’re reliable, that you’re going to be there.” Travis wrapped his arms around her and held her so tight she could barely breathe, and she felt him nod against the top of her head. I know,” he said quietly. “I know, and I’m so [ __ ] sorry, baby. I’m so sorry.” They stood like that for a long time, just holding each other in the hospital corridor while doctors and nurses walked past them and machines beeped in distant rooms.
And Taylor’s mother lay in a bed just 20 ft away, fighting for her life. And slowly, gradually, Taylor felt her anger transforming into something else, into understanding and compassion, and the painful recognition that they were both just scared people trying their absolute best not to screw up this precious thing they’d built together. “We need to go talk to her,” Taylor said finally, pulling back just enough to look up at Travis.
“You need to go in there and tell her what you just told me. You need to make this right.” Travis looked absolutely terrified, more scared than Taylor had ever seen him look before any game or interview or public appearance. But he nodded. “Okay,” he said, his voice still shaky. “Okay, yes, I’ll do that.
But Taye, what if she doesn’t forgive me? What if she decides I’m not good enough for you and tells you that you deserve better?” Taylor reached up and wiped the remaining tears off his face with her thumbs, gentle but firm. “Then we deal with it together,” she said simply. But you need to try. You need to show her who you really are.
Not the panicked version who said the wrong thing, but the real Travis, the one I fell in love with, the one who’s kind and caring and who would do anything for the people he loves. They walked back to Andrea’s hospital room together, their hands clasped so tightly that Taylor’s fingers were starting to go numb, and Travis knocked softly on the door before slowly pushing it open.
Andrea was propped up in the hospital bed and when she saw the men enter saw Travis especially her expression was guarded careful the protective expression of a mother who would move mountains to keep her child safe. Andrea Travis said and his voice was stronger now more certain and he walked right up to the side of her bed without hesitation. I need to apologize to you.
What I said earlier about not being sure that was wrong. It was a lie. Actually, not an intentional lie, but a lie that came from fear and insecurity and my own complete inability to believe that I deserve your daughter. Andrea watched him carefully, her eyes sharp and assessing, and Taylor stayed back near the door, giving them space, feeling her heart hammering so hard in her chest that she could hear it in her ears.
Travis took a deep breath and continued, “The truth is, I’m more sure about Taylor than I’ve ever been about anything in my entire life. I’m sure that I love her. I’m sure that I want to build a life with her. I’m sure that I want to be there for every single high and every single low. And I’m sure that I want to be part of this family, your family, and that means being someone you can trust, someone you can count on, someone who will take care of your daughter the way she deserves to be taken care of.” Andrea’s expression
softened just slightly, and she glanced over at Taylor, who was openly crying again, these quiet tears that she wasn’t even trying to hide anymore. I panicked when you asked me that question,” Travis said. And now his voice was getting thick with emotion again. Because it felt like a test, like you were asking me if I was worthy of her.
And Andrea, I’m so scared that I’m not. But I’m learning. I’m trying every single day to be better. And I promise you that I will spend the rest of my life trying to be the man Taylor deserves, the man you can be proud to call family. Andrea was quiet for what felt like an eternity. and the only sounds in the room were the soft beeps of medical equipment and Taylor’s quiet crying and Travis’s ragged breathing.
Then Andrea reached out with one hand and took Travis’s hand in both of hers, held it gently but firmly, and she looked up at him with eyes that were tired from treatment but still sharp, still full of fierce maternal love. Travis, she said softly, her voice a little weak but steady. Being worthy of my daughter isn’t about being perfect or having all the answers.
It’s about showing up, being honest, and loving her even when it’s hard, even when you’re scared, even when you don’t have everything figured out. What you said earlier hurt me, not because I thought you didn’t care about Taylor, but because I thought you didn’t trust yourself enough to be honest about just how much you do care.
” Travis nodded, fresh tears streaming down his face, and Taylor walked over and stood right next to him, put her hand on his back, felt him lean slightly into her touch. I do care,” Travis said, his voice firm despite the tears. “I care so much that it keeps me up at night. I care enough that I’m willing to have these hard conversations.
I care enough that I’m willing to admit when I’m wrong, and I care enough that I’m standing here asking for a second chance to show you who I really am.” Andrea looked at both of them, at the way they stood together supporting each other, at the way Taylor’s hand rested protectively on Travis’s back, and the way Travis held himself like he was ready to fight the entire world if it meant keeping Taylor safe.
And slowly, gradually, she smiled. It was a small smile, tired from everything her body was going through, but it was real and warm and full of the kind of love that only mothers possess. You already have your second chance,” she said gently, giving Travis’s hand one more squeeze before releasing it. “We all say the wrong thing sometimes, especially when we’re scared.
What matters is that you’re here now, that you’re being honest, that you’re trying to make it right.” She paused and her expression got just a little bit stern. But Travis, if you ever make me doubt your commitment to my daughter again, if you ever make me worry about whether you’re going to be there for her, we are going to have a very different kind of conversation.
Do you understand me? Travis actually laughed, this wet, broken sound that was half sobb and half relief. And he nodded so vigorously that Taylor thought his neck might hurt later. Yes, ma’am, he said firmly. I understand completely, and I promise you it won’t happen again. I swear to you, it won’t happen again. Andrea held her arms out to both of them then.
And Taylor and Travis bent down together, carefully navigating all the tubes and wires and medical equipment, and they hugged Andrea as gently as they could. This incredible woman who was fighting so hard, who loved so fiercely, who just wanted to know that her daughter would be safe and loved and cared for no matter what happened.
When Taylor and Travis finally left the hospital that night, stepping out into the cold evening air, the sky was dark and full of stars that you could barely see through the city lights. Travis held Taylor’s hand as they walked slowly to the parking lot. Neither of them in any hurry to let go of this moment. “I’m sorry,” Travis said again, his voice quiet in the night air. “For all of it.
For scaring your mom, for making you doubt me, for not being brave enough to just tell the truth right from the beginning.” Taylor stopped walking and turned to face him. Reached up to cup his face in both her hands, even though she had to stretch up on her toes to reach him properly. “I’m sorry, too,” she said softly, “for not giving you a chance to explain before I attacked you in that corridor.
For letting my fear and anger take over instead of trying to understand what was really going on with you.” Travis pulled her close and kissed her forehead, soft and lingering, and Taylor felt something settle in her chest, something that had been churning and painful and sharp. finally finding a kind of peace.

“We’re going to be okay,” she whispered against his chest, breathing in the familiar scent of him. “All of us.” When Taylor and Travis finally left the hospital that night, stepping out into the cold evening air, the sky was dark and full of stars that you could barely see through the city lights.
Travis held Taylor’s hand as they walked slowly to the parking lot, neither of them in any hurry to let go of this moment. I’m sorry,” Travis said again, his voice quiet in the night air. “For all of it. My mom is going to beat this cancer, and we’re going to figure out how to be better at communicating with each other, and we’re going to stop letting our fears make us say stupid things to the people we love.
” Travis held her even tighter and pressed his cheek against the top of her head. “Yeah,” he agreed quietly. “Yeah, we are, and I want you to know something. When your mom asked me about being serious, about marriage, about all of that forever stuff, I want you to know that my heart knew the answer immediately, even if my mouth said all the wrong things.
My heart has known since the day I met you that you’re it for me, that you’re the person I want to choose every single day for the rest of my life.” Taylor tilted her head back to look up at him, and in the dim parking lot lights, she could see his face, open and honest, and full of so much love that it made her chest ache in the best possible way.
I choose you too, she said, her voice clear and certain. Even when you’re an idiot, even when you say the wrong thing at the worst possible time, even when you’re terrified and insecure and completely human, I choose you, Travis Kelsey. Every single day, they stood there in that parking lot holding each other.
Two people who had just fought their way through pain and fear and doubt to find something stronger and more real on the other side. And for the first time in hours, Taylor felt like she could actually breathe properly, like everything really was going to be okay, like they were going to make it through this together and come out even stronger.
