In a story that exemplifies the fierce, unwavering power of a mother’s love, a baby girl named Ruby Ray has become a beacon of hope and resilience. Her life began amid an unimaginable battle, as her mother, Ariana Brewer, fought a grueling war against a diagnosis of leukemia. Their journey, a harrowing tale of medical emergencies, fragile beginnings, and profound determination, has captured the hearts of a nation. Yet, as this remarkable family prepares for a long-awaited reunion in their hometown of Las Vegas, their story has brought to light a critical and alarming issue: the dire state of pediatric healthcare in their home state.
Ariana Brewer’s ordeal began when she was diagnosed with leukemia while pregnant. This terrifying news forced her to leave her home in Las Vegas and relocate to Southern California to begin a series of intensive treatments at UCLA. For Ariana, the struggle was twofold: fighting for her own life while simultaneously trying to protect the precious life growing inside her. At one point, her bone marrow was a staggering 90% cancer, a statistic that underscores the immense danger both she and her unborn child were in. The odds were stacked against them, but they held onto a defiant hope that love and medical science would prevail.
The fight came to a head on December 19th when doctors, in a terrifying turn of events, could no longer detect a heartbeat from the baby. In an emergency C-section, baby Ruby Ray was born three months premature, a tiny fighter weighing a mere 1 pound 3.6 ounces. Her size was so minuscule that her mother and father could barely hold her. As Ariana recounts, “Her little hand would come out and it was like it didn’t even wrap around our fingertips. It was crazy”. This fragile beginning marked the start of Ruby’s long and courageous stay in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), a period defined by small victories and an unyielding will to live.
Despite her incredibly difficult start, Ruby has shown remarkable progress. She has since grown to a healthy 9 pounds 2 ounces, a testament to her strength and the dedication of her medical team. However, her journey is not over yet. A significant consequence of her extreme prematurity is underdeveloped lungs, which require her to be on continuous breathing support. To give her the best chance at a normal life and allow her to finally come home, she is scheduled to undergo a tracheostomy surgery. This procedure will be a pivotal moment, offering a tangible path to her long-awaited homecoming and the opportunity to live under the same roof as her family.
While Ruby’s progress fills her parents with immense pride and relief, Ariana’s own medical battle has also reached a critical turning point. After multiple rounds of chemotherapy, radiation, and immunotherapy proved unsuccessful, doctors at UCLA turned to a groundbreaking new treatment: CAR T-cell therapy. This innovative treatment involves using the patient’s own immune cells to find and destroy cancer cells. For Ariana, it was a success. “It brought me to remission,” she stated, her voice filled with emotion and gratitude. Now, cancer-free, she is preparing for a bone marrow transplant in the coming weeks, a procedure that will cement her remission and hopefully close this chapter of her life for good.
As the family looks toward the future, an emotional reunion with their oldest child in Las Vegas is the light at the end of the tunnel. “The day that we’re able to finally go home and I will have all four of my children under the same roof is going to be the best day of Our Lives,” Ariana shared, her voice brimming with hope. However, this joy is tempered by a gnawing concern about the healthcare landscape back home. Ariana has voiced her fear about returning, knowing firsthand that the specialized care she and her baby need might not be available.
This concern is not without merit. According to the American Board of Pediatrics, Nevada ranks 49th in the nation in the ratio of pediatricians to children, signifying a severe and pervasive doctor shortage. The lack of specialized doctors, coupled with limited access to urgent care, poses a significant threat to children’s health across the state. For a family like Ariana’s, where a child has complex medical needs and a mother requires ongoing specialized follow-up care, this issue is not merely a statistic; it is a very real and terrifying barrier to their well-being.
For now, the family is staying at the Ronald McDonald House in Los Angeles, a temporary home that allows them to be close to the hospital and their medical support system. It’s a powerful reminder that their fight, while nearing its conclusion, is still far from over. Their story is more than just a medical miracle; it is a call to action. It highlights the vast disparities in healthcare access and the urgent need for systemic change. While Ariana and Ruby’s unwavering spirit is an inspiration, it shouldn’t be a requirement for survival. Their experience underscores a fundamental truth: every family deserves to have a robust, accessible, and high-quality healthcare system to rely on, regardless of where they live. As they prepare to go home, their journey serves as a powerful testament to the resilience of the human spirit and a poignant demand for a better, more equitable healthcare future.
