The Kansas City Chiefs were dealt another blow to their already suspect wide receivers room in Week 1 after tight end Travis Kelce accidentally injured his teammate and wide receiver, Xavier Worthy.
Worthy was running a crossing route on the very first offensive series of the game against the Los Angeles Chargers on Friday when he was leveled by Kelce, who was also coming across the field.
Worthy left the game with an injury that was later diagnosed as a dislocated shoulder. Now, the Chiefs are trying to figure out if Worthy can slap a brace on it and return at some point, or if he’ll need surgery, which could end his campaign.
Kelce might catch some flak from his fiancée and pop superstar Taylor Swift, who made it quite clear she was a big fan of Worthy when the Chiefs drafted him.
“I fell in love with it. I became obsessed with it,” she said of becoming an NFL fan. “I became like a person who was running through the halls of my house screaming, ‘We drafted Xavier Worthy!’ And my friends are like, ‘Who body snatched you? What do you mean we drafted Xavier Worthy?’”
“I forget where I was, but you were the first person to tell me that we drafted the fastest man in the draft,” Kelce said to Swift.
“No, I was screeching. I couldn’t believe it. Freaking out,” Swift responded.
On the latest episode of his “New Heights” podcast, Kelce took responsibility for accidentally injuring his teammate.
“I’m supposed to be running my route at depth for Worthy. So, it’s frustrating for me. I was trying to kind of set up my guy to be able to get into position, and it all just happened pretty quick,” Kelce explained.
“I just gotta be better, man. I’m 13 years in the league. There is no excuse for me running into my own guys like that.”
If Worthy is forced to miss significant time, the Chiefs are going to have an even bigger problem at wide receiver than they already do.
Rashee Rice is out for the first six games because of a suspension and rookie Jalen Royals didn’t play in Week 1 due to injury. That leaves Patrick Mahomes depending on Marquise Brown, JuJu Smith-Schuster and Tyquan Thornton, along with Kelce.
That’s not going to cut it for a Super Bowl contender like Kansas City, so don’t be surprised to be general manager Brett Veach get aggressive and bring in more help.
