From Fan Favorite to Fired: The Buried Cri.me That Ended Josh Harris’s ‘Dea.dliest Catch’ Career

For over a decade, fans of the hit reality series ‘Deadliest Catch’ have ridden the tumultuous waves of the Bering Sea alongside Captain Josh Harris. They watched him grow from a greenhorn deckhand into the determined captain of the legendary F/V Cornelia Marie, taking the helm after the tragic death of his father, the iconic Captain Phil Harris. Josh’s journey was one of legacy, struggle, and redemption, a narrative that captivated millions and made him a central figure in the high-stakes world of crab fishing. But in the fall of 2022, that carefully crafted image shattered, and his career came to an abrupt and silent end. The reason? A dark secret from his youth, a criminal conviction involving a child, had finally surfaced, forcing the Discovery Channel to sever all ties and leaving a franchise in turmoil.
Josh Harris first appeared on ‘Deadliest Catch’ in 2007, a young man learning the ropes under his larger-than-life father. When Captain Phil suffered a massive stroke and passed away in 2010, the show’s viewers grieved with Josh and his brother, Jake. The weight of a legacy was thrust upon Josh’s shoulders, and he rose to the occasion. In 2013, he earned his captain’s license and, along with his business partner Casey McManus, took control of the Cornelia Marie. He quickly proved himself to be a capable and fearless leader, battling brutal storms and immense pressure to honor his father’s memory. His grit and determination made him a fan favorite, a symbol of resilience in one of the world’s most dangerous professions.
Over the years, Harris appeared in 184 episodes, his story arc becoming a cornerstone of the series. Viewers saw his triumphs and his struggles. In 2017, he took a commendable step back from the show to focus on his personal well-being, confronting personal demons that he had been trying to suppress. When he returned to the screen a year later, he seemed stronger and more focused than ever. His success even spawned a spin-off, ‘Deadliest Catch: Bloodline,’ which premiered in 2020 and followed his adventures fishing the lucrative waters off Hawaii’s Kona Coast. He spoke enthusiastically about the future, telling interviewers he could see himself getting a place in Hawaii and fishing there for months at a time. Off-screen, his life seemed just as full. He was a proud father to his daughter, Kinsley, born in 2013 to his longtime partner, Jenna Bullis. He gushed about his daughter in interviews, describing her as a smart, funny child who had him “wrapped around her little finger.”
To the public, Josh Harris was the embodiment of the ‘Deadliest Catch’ spirit: a hardworking family man who had overcome tragedy to forge his own path. That carefully constructed image, however, concealed a disturbing past. In September 2022, a post on Reddit brought to light a shocking court case from over two decades prior. The post revealed that in 1999, Josh Harris was arrested and faced serious charges stemming from an incident that occurred in July 1998. At the time, Harris was just 15 or 16 years old.

The allegations were heinous. Harris was accused of the inappropriate touching of a young girl, who was reportedly a neighbor and the daughter of a deckhand—essentially a family friend. The victim bravely informed her mother, who immediately reported the crime to the police. Evidence, including DNA, was collected from the scene. Due to processing delays, Harris was not formally arrested until March 25, 1999, when a search warrant was served and the crime lab matched his DNA to the evidence.
Following his arrest, Harris was placed under house confinement with his father, Captain Phil, and his stepmother. The court stipulated that he was to have no contact with the victim or any minors under the age of 12 without adult supervision. This detail adds a complicated layer to the legacy of Captain Phil, suggesting he was aware of his son’s troubled past long before ‘Deadliest Catch’ brought their family into the international spotlight.
On October 4, 1999, the Snohomish County prosecutor filed a serious charge against Josh. However, he reportedly agreed to plead guilty to lesser charges of misconduct and inappropriate communication with a minor. On January 6, 2000, his confession was entered into the court record. “On July 14, 1998, I touched the victim in a way that would have made a normal person feel uncomfortable,” the statement reads. “I also then spoke to her in an inappropriate manner, discussing topics that were not suitable for her age. When I acted in a way that made the victim feel uncomfortable, one of my intentions was to fulfill my own personal desires.”
According to Washington state court records, Harris was found guilty. He served nine months and was required to participate in an evaluation to better understand and manage his personal behaviors. For over 20 years, this dark chapter remained buried.
The revelation sent shockwaves through the ‘Deadliest Catch’ community. The Discovery Channel, which had built a significant portion of its flagship franchise around Harris, acted swiftly and decisively, though quietly. In a single, clear statement, the network announced its decision: “We’ve been made aware of this issue. Josh will not appear in future episodes of this series.”
The digital cleanup was just as swift. The official webpage for ‘Deadliest Catch: Bloodline’ was taken down, replaced by a “page not found” error message. Harris himself went silent. His social media accounts, once active with updates about his life and fishing escapades, have been dormant since the summer of 2022, just before his past finally caught up with him.
The fallout leaves the ‘Deadliest Catch’ franchise in an unprecedented and difficult position. How does a network handle the legacy of a star who was featured so prominently for over a decade? Erasing him from hundreds of hours of past episodes would be a monumental, if not impossible, task. His story is deeply woven into the fabric of the show’s history. Yet, his continued presence in reruns presents a significant moral and public relations dilemma. Can fans remain loyal to a show now that they know the truth about one of its biggest stars? The questions hang heavy over the future of the series, a stark reminder that the realities behind reality television are often far darker and more complex than what is shown on screen.
