New York’s victory in the first postseason game was overshadowed by their star player’s injury. Will she be able to return to the court?
ans of the New York Liberty are on the edge of their seats. The opening playoff win against the Phoenix Mercury was clouded by a knee injury to their star forward, Breanna Stewart. The player, who is the heart and soul of the team, was left on the floor after a collision with two opponents, setting off alarms on the court.
The injury occurred with 3:01 minutes left in overtime, during New York’s 76-69 victory. Stewart drove to the basket against the defense of Satou Sabally and DeWanna Bonner from the Mercury. She made the shot, but the impact left her on the ground, clutching her left knee.
Despite the pain, Stewart got up to take a free throw but missed it. After that, she couldn’t continue. At 2:07, she was substituted. Liberty’s coach, Sandy Brondello, was clear about the situation: “She asked me to sub her out and looked uncomfortable, so that’s why we took her off the court. We hope she recovers soon.”
The concern is greater because this isn’t the first time Stewart’s knee has caused her trouble. She missed 13 games this season due to a bone bruise in her right knee. Now, with the postseason at its peak, a new injury to her left knee is the worst news the Liberty could receive.
Breanna Stewart is the heart and soul of the Liberty. She led the team in scoring during the regular season with 18.3 points, 1.4 steals, and 1.4 blocks per game, starting in all 31 games she played. Her presence on the court is a game-changer, and without her, the Liberty are a completely different team.
